timing chain question
 

Im a newbie and the more I drive my 1985 targa,the more I think we will eventually get married. But,how good is the timing chain on a car with 160,000 miles with no way to tell if it was ever replaced. It was a 2 owner california car that was repoed to third owner who sold it to me.He never drove it,it was in a garage for 2 years.No docs on car,but everything seems very good so far(knock,knock)What are chances it was replaced?? Slim? or prolly?? thanks

You can check for wear by removing one of the chain covers then you can inspect the chain, tensioners and rails. Not a difficult job at all. Replacing them is a different story.

belts need frequent replacing in comparison, at 160k miles if that is what they have the components are likely due for replacement at least a good check. you don't want to have the cam timing get messed up while the engine is running,
if checking look for master link, if found then they are not the originals, doesn't mean they haven't been replaced however, the chains and other parts there can be replaced without pulling the engine completely out, maybe just dropped a bit or left in place, it can be involved if e.g. cam timing needs checking/etc. My 2 cents, others here know infinitely more. It is all doable if you get help here and are patient.

If the chains are worn out, its time for a build..you can paint it any way you want but its time for a build.
