Rod's ac compressor rebuild...anyone done it?

Hey all,

I have an 88 model that is needing a new ac compressor. Leaking around seal and throwing oil up on engine lid. I read Rod's write up on the Pelican site and would like to give it a go. Figure if I am going to have to buy a compressor, I might as well give this a try first. Might save quiet a bit of money. Wonder how many of you have done this and if you could give me some encouraging words. I live in Texas and it won't be long before I will be needing it. System has not been open since I bought the car in 1995. Should I replace the drier while I am at it? Any other suggestions?

Well, I had to replace the seals on mine when I converted from R-11 to 134a. You need to purchase a new seal kit. Not a whole lot to it. The clutch is held on by a center bolt - mine was hex. Behind it is the ring that holds the bearing/shaft in place. Remove the housing bolts, then the shaft ring and it should come apart. Keep it clean and replace the oil. I would replace the filter/dryer if it has been in the system since 88.

The important thing is to make sure your system remains closed while the compressor is out. Once the rebuild is done and the compressor is installed, you need to evacuate the system to remove moisture and check for leaks.

Once this is done then the system can be charged.

I would give it a go (and did)!

As Steve says, it really isn't that challenging and you can save a great deal of money compared to buying a rebuilt or new compressor. I stayed with R-12 and so far the system has kept its charge. Make sure that your front condenser fan is working and that it is fused.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll be happy to share whatever I've learned.
