82 SC broken down

So I'm on the side of the road with my SC broken down and I can manually run the fuel pump with the airbox cover off. Also smell of gas. The CDI box is humming and I'm getting ready to pull the distributer since I feel I'm out of options. Anyone know how I can test the green wire on the dizzy or even that the coil is working. The obvious is that I'm alon and can't crank the car and check for spark. Any ideas would be appreciated

Don't know... but if you're lucky enough to have a timing light with a long cord -- and even luckier enough to have it with you -- you could hook it up, crank the engine, and it should indicate spark.

Others here know more.

Good luck.

Thanks, no spark and I'm pretty sure that it's related to the distributer.

Take the car to a safe place to work on..........

Niner11,

If your are attempting to work on your the car to make it run while stranded in a public road, think twice!!!! You are much better off (safety wise) taking the car home or to a parking lot. Have it towed somewhere where you could safely work on the car. Do you know anyone with a AAA card? Someone might be able to assist you in your predicament. Wished I could be there to offer help. Good luck.

Good point! I got lucky and coasted to a spot way off of the shoulder... Still not ideal. It's on the flat bed now unfortunately.

Got the car home and have done some trouble shooting. So far the green wire from the distributor has no shorts no matter how much I move it around. That led me to the CDI box. From some old posts I removed it and opened the case up to find that the C8 capacitor is ng. I'll try to add a few pics.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1312152526.jpg

niner11,

Since I have very limited knowledge about electronics, I resort to switching a known working CDI to help me in troubleshooting. Do you have a specific test or procedure to determine a bad CDI? It would be a helpful tip for DIY troubleshooters. Thanks.

Thanks Warren and ischmitz! The above link allowed me to trouble shoot my CDI box and replace the faulty capacitor.
