Unhappy Clutch cable is loose?

Ok I have my engine back in, I re-attached the clutch cable. It was new last year. But I can't get the cable tight. There is about 2" of free play before the pedal engages at all.

The end of the cable at the pedal assy is tight, I screwed the cable in quite deep. I tried tightening it where the cable attaches to the transmission. It r\tightens but I am left with the 2" mentioned above. Any ideas????

Help

Shawn

Shawn,

Can't say for sure, but if the Bowden tube wasn't seated correctly at the firewall when you did the initial adjustment ... it could have 'popped' into place after a few operations of the pedal. What happens, and it has been reported several time here when people are doing their first cable replacement ... is that the nose 'fitting' of the Bowden Cable hangs up on the body sheetmetal, rather than seating into the 'dimple' where the cable is supposed to fit.

Then you would have an additional amount of freeplay ... by perhaps 3/8" or 10 mm or so.

Thanks Warren

I will check to ensure the tube is snug in there. Are there any tricks to know that it is in properly?

Update

I checked the tube like Warren mentioned and it was seated fine. Then I found out what I did wrong.

The horseshoe shaped helper spring was not snapped back. I snapped it back attached everything. Tight! Now I just have to do a complete adjustment.

Stupid problem but might help someone else sometime.

Hello Shawn,
I'm having a similar problem, I bought an 83 SC last year and it had a clutch cable with a modified brass household gas appliance fitting stuck on the end of the Bowden tube where it meets the transmission, in essence to take up slack in the length of the clutch cable. My throwout arm is right tight to the exhaust, would you explain to me what you did when you "snapped" the horseshoe spring back? Thanks very much!

Jordan sorry it has taken so long to respond, But I am a NEW DAD now

Anyways just use a long screwdriver and it pull towards the rear of the car. same opposite as what would happen if you pushed the clutch in. The spring was just in the wrong position.
