Rattle in dash area around gauges

I just bought an 82 911sc with about 45K on it. It is a beautiful car and I love it. I have a rattle around the top of the dash (pad) around the tach. I can duplicate it by tapping the top of the dash pad right there. Kinda sounds metallic. So except for taking the tach out has anyone else experienced this and found an easier fix? Thanks I haven't had a Porsche in a few years. This will be the first of many questions I am sure.

drodg, I chased a noise like that on an 82 SC I had a few years ago (wait! I guess it was 20 years ago!). Anyway, it turned out the dash pad itself was loose. I finally fixed it when I replaced the windshield after a stone hit, and using a few new pad fasteners from our host I properly re-attached the dash pad. There are also some electrical parts in that area which you can access through the trunk (that cardboard piece comes out with a few small bolts, and will give you a little room to work). Good luck.

I would suggest that you do your best to look at whatever you can get to from under the bonnet, looking inward towards the dash...see if something LOOKS suspicious...chances are this will be something related to p911dad's suggestion/experience, however.

Just try attempting some various "strategies" from the "other" side....first. Then remove some gauges.....

BEST!

you could pull the tach out (which takes about 10 seconds) and see if there's something behind there that could rattle.

the tach can be hard to remove. If so, then start with the clock, and push out the speedometer from behind, then the tach.
