This past week
My lovely wife bought me a 1979 911sc last year for Christmas from her very good friend, who happened to be the original owner of the car. Her friend and or her son no longer wanted and could no longer afford the car, which needed its fair share of deferred maintenance. I was happy that we saved the car from the Junk yard and able to keep a classic on the road. Since taking ownership, Nov 2010, I have done nothing with the car other than driving it once or twice every other month.
Which no brings me to this past Saturday, I decided it was time to get some new tires there was three different tires and all looked pretty bad then look into the brakes just for a measure of safety, you see I wanted to take Porsche on a road trip this weekend to the Lemons race at Thunder Hill. I would order the tires have them shipped to the local tire shop to mount on the rims that I dropped off that morning. I also wanted to polish and wax the car and figured that this would be the perfect time to do so. Well as they say one thing leads to another. After looking at the rotors and seeking that they didn’t turn at all, I realize that I was looking at more than replacing just the rotors and pads and being done for the day. Both front Calipers had seized and need to be rebuilt, have no clue how the car ever stopped. Now I also now know why gas mileage was a bit off. One bad ball joint equals two being replaced. While you’re there you might as well replace the tie rods with turbo ones. Oh and why not some new shocks? Of course new wheel bearing in the front as well. The brake job included rebuilding three of the four calipers, new rotors, new pads, new lines, flushing with denatured alcohol, and new blue fluid. While I was shopping for the parts I noticed a very nice set used leather seats that matched my interior so I loaded them in the truck as well as a new Momo steering wheel that would look nice in my hands. Change the oil and Trans fluid. ( Man that’s a lot of fluid) Finished all the work last night about 10:30, all told five steady days of cleaning and repairing various parts of the car. Cant wait for today when I get home from work to get my wheels and tires so I can take her out for a spin . I would like to give some props to the following: Wayne’s 101 Project Book is the best investment if you own one of these car. Hands down the best. Countless posters on this board – Without their pictures and posts of jobs done in the past I don’t think I would have begun to dive into the project. Especially the removal of the ball joint. The crew at Ned’s Auto Body Supply in Concord. They really know there stuff when it comes to paint, took my car down there and showed me what I needed. The results are awesome especially if you consider that its 32 years old. Lastly Spencer at PartsHeaven ( I’m not sure if I can post another parts supplier) I need a lot of different items and needed them now and couldn’t wait to have them shipped. It is handy to have a good supply of new and used parts close by. Not to mention a very helpful and friendly staff. For now it's off to Lemons for the weekend, after that nothing till winter when I plan on pulling the engine and resealing it. I wish I had the time to adjust the valves, but I just couldn't get all that done in time. I know I should have done it when I changed the oil but I figure if it costs me 8 - 10 quarts of oil oh well. It needed an oil change. Thanks to all and good luck on you projects. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
