1989 911 Carrea Gear shifter loose and won't engage

Hi...my 89 Carrea gear shifter began to become very loose and I couldnt access 1st or Reverse. The only gear I ended up being able to engage somehow was 4th to drive home & to the shop. Now, I can't engage any gear as it just flops around, although the clutch has about 600 miles on it and was grabbing but smelling like burning when I brought it in.

Any thoughts and average cost? Something with the gear box maybe?

Pop off the plate over the tunnel on the floor behind and between your seats. CHeck the to see if the coupler is loose. If so, an easy fix.

Thx...you think the burning smell was because I was driving from a stand still into 4th gear?

That is a most likely conclusion..Hopefully it is only the coupler and as said above, an easy fix

If not the coupler, might be the cup/ball mechanism at the end of the shifter...more likely on a 915 than a G50 but that's where I would look next.

Agreed. Sounds like the coupler to me, but if that's OK check the ball socket next. These are plastic and can and do crack/disintegrate over time on G50's as well.

Parts 10 and 11 on the diagram below:
