Elephant racing Oil cooler fans

Hi all,
My 89 carrera is missing the thermofan for the front oil cooler has anyone brought one from elephant racing? $88 seems like a fair price.Cheers Gerry.

Hi Gerry,

There have been a few posts about non OEM fans, from what i remember there are two sizes available from ER and there is another aftermarket company that a lot of people use as well...I'm sure somebody with a better memory than me will chime in

Good time to replace the thermostat with a 210 degree unit, while you're there !

Cheers !
Phil

SPAL has a variety of sizes. I have a 7.5" on my 930 and a 9" on my 3.2L
Both are controlled by a lighted rocker switch on the dash. Bill K

Thanks guys,
Hey Phil what is the thermostat usually set to open at and is it much of a job to change, do you just change internals or whole assy? Also does it make that much of a change in running temps.l was looking at the ele racing fan because they recon it moves twice as much air as a factory fan.Cheers mate

Hi Gerry,

The thermosat that everybody replaces on their oil cooler is a BMW unit that turns on your fan at 210 degrees as compared to the OEM unit which turns on your fan at 240 degrees ...
Very straightforward replacement and Pelican sells it !

The thermostat is about the same size as your thumb and is very easy to replace, although it's better done with the oil cooler removed !

Soak your oil line fittings real good with a good type of loose nut spray before attempting to remove them and heat them up with a torch to help as well. You will probably loose less than 1/2 liter of oil when doing this job ...

Good luck with your next project

Cheers !
Phil

Thanks Phil l was thinking you wre talking about the main thermostat not the one on the cooler too easy l'll look up the part. The only things l want to sort out now are the thermofan and redo inter floor as the old coating is lifting l have some por15 for that, and then just need to drive it lots.Cheers mate

If you're referring to this:
ELEPHANT RACING Oil Cooler Fans
I installed one on my '86. I also opted for the installation kit. Has everything you need to install including an adjustable thermoswitch. Of course on an 89 you can wire into the existing thermoswitch. Or there's always the toggle switch on the dash option which is significantly less expensive.

I can say it works quite well. I can sit in traffic with the AC running at 105+ and the oil temp gauge stays right at the 9:00 position.
