Wow, two issues with an R Gruppe members car on the cover. Steven Childs the owner of the white 1973 Carrera RS on the May issue and Randy W's white car on the Nov 01 cover.
Thanks Pete!!!! Randy Jones 1971 911 And Proud R Grupper |

Shucks! Here I am, still waiting for my copy! Randy, you already have the magazine, and you're up there on the rural coast? Hmmm, I wonder if this could be a SCWDP plot?

Just got my copy too.
The (sad) thing that struck me though; was that Excellence, in further acquiescence to Porsches' new "line," set up the R-Gruppe car as a straw-man for the GT2 to defeate on it's own terms.
If Excellence wanted to be true to the readers, they could have balanced the article with the benifits of the lighter car. Sure they threw a few bones to the RS, but as a whole the article was "fear not those early cars, go buy new. . .*if* your man enough" Pure puff -- eech! |

That's cool we get to see another readers ride. I like those articles. I'm still waiting for a write up on Jack's Black Beauty. I wish they would do more of those kind of articles.
My biggest gripe with excellence is that I'm only 3 hours from their HQ's and i'm always one of the last to get my newest issue ![]() |

It is really too bad that we had to depend on ROW magazines to bring the 'good' news of the RS 2.7 to our shores 30 years ago. I was disappointed then, and even more so, now, that none of our 'enthusiast' magazines didn't get Mark Donohue to do a review or comparison against the 'high' watermarks of the day, such as the 427 cobra or Ferrari Daytona!
Funny, how everybody now is raving about something that didn't even rate a footnote in the US magazines of its' time! And, the Bobby Allison review of the '74 models was one of the biggest comedic events in Car and Driver history ... almost as good as their publishing the test data from John DeLorean's 'ringer' '64 GTO ... and passing it off as typical results from something the customer could buy off the showroom floor!
