Painting a black targa bar cover

What is the best product for a professional respray on the targa bar? I am talking about a repaint off the car, after stripping the original, faded and chipped finish. This is a factory black bar. I want to exactly match the factory finish.

I posted this on the paint and body work forum, too, but did not get a response.

I'd think any local body shop would be able to do a bc/cc semi gloss black which would be very durable and relatively cheap. For a less durable finish, you could do it youself with a semi-gloss spray can.

If you're good with a rattle can, Rust-Oleum 7777 Satin Black is a perfect match. Very durable.

I like tcar's idea. Cheap to spray and repair. The targa bar is not really in harms way, either.

If your going to the trouble of taking it off the car, you might as well have it powder coated. It will be much more resistant to chipping.

It's when you take the top off and on that causes the chips. and if he has the bar off why not powder coat?

How? I've never chipped mine. MaybeI'm just lucky? Nothing ever touches the bar at all. I guess you mean if someone 'slips' and drops a bare peg on there? Wouldn't powder coating be 'marred' anyway? Just curious.....

PC will cost over $100. Rattle can a lot cheaper and you can easily touch up.

Joe Bob. it's off the car and powder coating will mean he never has to touch it up. Mine was first painted and I was alway's touching it up. Since I had it powder coated i just wipe it off. My advice would be different if it wasn't already off the car. In that case I would agree with you.

The answer is to find out exactly what the factory finish was? Doesn't matter, that original paint is long gone, right? Everything fades after awhile; is there a code or something out there that can be matched? Is R. 7777 really 'exact'? I imagine it to be so close, noone would ever know? That is the advice I've always seen from those who know (that I trust to know).

I removed it for a repaint around 5 or 6 years ago. The original paint was a mess. (Funny, because the original paint on the rest of the car is still pretty good.) I had it professionally painted with a Glasurit product, plus a "texture additive." The painter probably added too much of the additive, because the bar is too heavily grained, today. I want to find the formula that gives the same texture as the factory used. Believe it, or not, I am going to remove it again, this winter. It's how I keep the nuts from rusting onto those little studs!

I read somewhere on this board that powder coating the targa bar is not a good idea, the finish doesn't hold up well in the sun. Multiple threads on this.

Anybody got a good photo of what the texture should look like? Mine has very little texture (and in a couple of spots very little paint probably from where one of the POs duct-taped a tarp to the car).

Tom, thanks for posting. It bumped this project back onto my list. I'm sure there are threads related to the removal and how to deal with the targa script (beyond just sanding the paint back off?). I see a search tool in my future.
