quick release hub setup

Hello, I am planning on putting on a quick release system, probably a NRG 2.5 quick release (6 bolt on both sides) with a 6 bolt steering wheel on one side (a nardi), and the other side is where my question comes up. I could use the factory hub, but i feel like the wheel would be in my stomach, so I would like to put on a nrg short hub.

Do they make nrg short hub in the right spline setup for the porsche 911 sc? if so, where can buy it?? (link would be great)

thanks
scott

Quick Release Hub

first question is this collectable car or a race car, meaning not planning to go back to stock? If race car, play car, I would simply weld it to the shaft.

yeah its a track car, and ive heard of the welding option to completely eliminate steering "play", but honestly, i a wimp when it comes to the permanent stuff like welding it on.

I dont know how the welding option works/ what piece you weld to the shaft?

Would it have less play if I kept the original hub?? I could just add a quick release and a wheel with the same depth, because I do want the wheel to come out a little further than it does now, but that still might be too much.

Back to the original question, does the nrg short hub come in a size that fits?
Thanks
Scott

well, to be honest, any hub with the 6 bolt pattern (and the splines needed for it to fit on a porsche) will work for me. ive heard that momo and maybe some other companies make one.

I just like the nrg one because it is short, so it should work well together with the quick release

Mst guys I've seen use the short momo hub, a Snap Off or Techniq quick release, and a fairly flat wheel. This will put the wheel pretty close to stock position.
You're better off using a Momo wheel - Momo and Nardi patterns are not the same, and if you use the Nardi, you'll need an adapter that adds another 1/2".

The short NRG quick release is terrible. I tried one and quickly removed it. It had too much play (right out of the box) and was anything but "quick" to release. Go with the Snap Off. Bolt on quick releases have to have something to bolt to, so a stock hub which is integrated with the stock wheel won't work. If you want to spend some $$$, look at the Rothsport setup which combines a custom short hub with a quick release that is modeled after the Porsche Motorsport design.

thanks for the help, I was thinking of using the nrg short hub and a normal length quick release, but if those ones are bad too, than I will go with something else.

Thanks
Scott

is there a specific name/ code for the spline setup on the porsche steering column that I should look for when buying a quick release?

Porsches use a 20mm, 40 spline shaft.
Your easiest and best solutionis a Momo hub and Snap Off QR. I was mistaken - the ones they now make will fit your Nardi wheel. This will cost about $300 new. If you wanna splurge, go with the Rothsport, like JP said.
I lucked into a factory cup car release - it's the best out there, but about $650 from Porsche

The standard NRG quick release works well, but I'm not sure if they make a hub that will fit the porsche 911 steering column. You need a hub that attaches to the Porsche steering column that the quick release bolts to (unless you use a weld-on release). To further clarify, there will be 4 pieces in the system: the hub (Momo, Sparco, Nardi, Rothsport, etc) that is attached to the splines on the steering column, then the quick release receiver is bolted to that, then the quick release snaps on to that (this is part travels with the steering wheel), and then the steering wheel is bolted to the quick release.

yeah, the nardi had the 6 hole pattern its just it has 3 holes on each side, rather than one hole and the top adn bottom, like the momos. but that would just mean that you would have to twist the tub when you are putting it on

That won't work. The bolt-circles are different too.
IIRC, it's 70mm for Momo/Sparco/OMP and 75 or 76 for Nardi/Personal/Raid wheels
Some quickreleases come with both (12 holes), if not, make sure to double check they fit both your wheel and hub!

I wouldn't worry too much about the added length of the hub/QR. Having the wheel closer to you actually is more comfortable (less steering effort).

the momo short hub looks great, i think its a go on that one. as for the quick release, which quick releases fit with the momo hub?/ what bolt pattern does that hub have? will it work with the nrg 2.5 quick release?

thanks
scott

I have a standard momo hub and slapped on a $30 ebay quick release. Its tight and doesn't have any play in it. You have to have some long fingers to reach the turn signal stalk though :P I like having the wheel closer to me. I would stick to the momo stuff as there are more wheels from other brands that use that bolt pattern.

Just looking for confirmation on that size steering column before I make an order (I can seem to find it anywhere).

Thanks
