Rear Decklid Scripts

I am not a fan of the whale tail on my '85 Carrera. I want to remove it. I'm going to buy a new decklid and store the old one so that I can change it back if necessary. I may also gently backdate the car just by switching the black trim to chrome. The idea is simply that the car will look a little more like a late '70's one than a mid eighties.

So - the question - once I have the new decklid installed, with the grill etc. I am wondering what rear logo should be added just beneath the grill? is there any resource that will tell you what was added when?

I'm guessing that for a mid-eighties car, if it didn't have the tail, then it might have had a "Carrera" script in the middle. But if it were a few years earlier what would it have been then? is there any way of telling?

Thanks in advance for your views.

Al

p.s. with regards to the performance benefits of the tail - I have read that they start to kick in at around 90mph but not much before then, can anyone confirm this (I'm sure this is covered elsewhere so don't worry too much)

I think it would be in the same spot:

If you have an '84 through '89, the decklid script should be "Carrera." Before that it would have been "911 SC." I've heard that the tail becomes effective at speeds in excess of 60 mph, but I have no evidence to support that claim. No tail on my car.

My '86 was ordered with the badge delete option, so it doesn't have anything on the rear deck.

You can leave it off and be "period correct."

The badged '85s had the Carrera script.

performance

When I got my SC it had no tail on it but it did have the front chin spoiler. It was unsettling to say the least on high speed off/on ramp runs. Once I added the turbo tail it smoothed out and handled considerably better. The only change made was the addition of the tail, so I would have to contribute the performance increase to the tail. I don't take off ramps at 90+ MPH, so I would say the impact of it is felt at much lower speeds than 90. Just an observation.

Here's for the 3.2 cars, in cm.

Really helpful to me, too -- thanks!

I would do a script delete. You are already creating your own body, so no need to label it. My 993 also is script delete. On your car, if you get a Carrera lid (84-89) it will have no holes drilled and i is really easy. On my SC it was bolted on and I welded the holes shut and had it painted.

Wow - this is great. Exactly what I needed - thank you also to those that mentioned the script delete option. Obvious though it may be I hadn't realised that that was a period delete.

Apologies - what do you mean by ramp runs? Like car park ramps?

Nice wheels!

That's the look I'm going for.

Are those wheels polished? or are they anodised? the tyres look fatter.

Greetings! The wheels are 16", 7's and 9's and they are polished. Tires are 225/50 in front and 245/45 in back. This is my 73 long hood with 87 Carrera rear flairs. I also have the 87 3.2 engine pushing it around.

Regards,
Al

Re: ramp runs

I'm talking about the on and off ramps for highways. they are usually banked nicely and if there is no traffic in front of you, they make a great place to toss the car around a bit. Like I said in my reply, I used to be able to take them at around 50 MPH or so, once the tail was installed I can take them somewhere around the 75 to 80 mark. maybe I'm just getting better at driving, but I truly believe the tail is a huge help in the handling department.

Of course for any law enforcement indidviduals reading this, the whole comment is theoretical!
