field test results

I was taking the wee beastie back to the ragtop guy to do final adjust, and hit a pothole. The car bottomed out and the wheels struck the surface. I could hear/feel the strike. The car remained under control. Exam'd the wheel and environs and found no damage. Paint scraped off wheel contract area ~1/16th ". No bent noth'n.
It works.

How loud was the sound compared to scraping metal? I was never fond of the attention drawn from scraping driveways--especially when it's not your own.

not loud

just a dulcet bump, no scraping--it rolled. I was the only one that noticed it. It took me over the obstacle and that was it. Why don't you get Wayne to start making them? All I want is a small percentage:D

wheel

yep i knew a guy who had one on his 83 slant nose the casters where a hard plastic wheel.....i thought it was a brillant idea for a lowered 911 for driveways and what not....

How about something like this using the front mounted spare tire :D

Just to review. There's no difference between bottoming out on a rigid caster wheel and bottoming out on the underside of the chassis. If a caster wheel hits something, like a bump in the road, it's the same impact on the chassis, despite the fact it can also roll after the initial impact.

Point being? Skid plate would have the same impact as well.

Understood. However, discussion seemed to veer toward protecting against bottoming out by adding stuff to the underside. All that does is decrease ground clearance and increase risk of bottoming out.

Slowly negotiating a driveway is something else. A skid plate is fine except for the noise it creates.

Yeah, I would probably just try to change lanes around the potholes but then I don't live there so it might not be possible. Then I would try to go slower.

Variable ride height like the KW kit for late model cars would be nice.

For driveways, the wheels look like a great solution. No scraping noise (or at least not as much) and no hard impacts.

Cool, rotate in one direction in "D", rotate in the other direction using "R".

I wonder how many beers it took to come up with that idea. I cannot argue with something that works, and that works.:)

This is better than watching the soaps..........or having a bad case of athletes feet............it just keeps on going....................

All is well till I take a right curve uphill at speed, then the spoiler in front of the drivers wheel scrapes.
Back to the front end, and up it about 1"--use weights to account for load.

Brorag 09-14-2011 10:22 AM

Just what is the best ride height?

After a suspension rebuild and alignment, I found that when driving in the mountains, the part of the spoiler in front of the drivers front tire scrapes occasionally when engaging a sharp uphill corner turning either left of right.
Maybe I've got this thing too low?
No, no more wheels.................
I started searching and came across this thread

I just stop and pick up a hitchhiker and have them sit on the whale tail for particularly bumpy sections of road. :-)
