can the heads be re-torqued with engine still in the car?

I've only checked them 500 miles after a rebuild and at a few thousand miles
there shouldn't be a reason to retorque and text book retorque could mess up your engine if anything it a good way to see if they're pulling out of the case if you only tighten I'm not a pro
