Shifting Troubles
My 73 911T Targa is having troubles shifting. I replaced the shifter bushings and adjusted the linkage. It shifts perfectly with the engine off. When going from neutral to first, the gears grind. If I go verrry slow, it will sometimes enter first without grinding. If I go from neutral to second, then quickly go to first, no problem. It shifts fine from second to third and other gears as well. Rarely it grinds entering reverse. The clutch and cable were recently replaced. I adjusted the clutch cable, and this problem seemed to get better for a while, but has recurred. There is less than one inch of clutch pedal play, when I pull back on the pedal. Is it possible that the problem lies with the other end of the cable, at the pedal box? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Sounds like the clutch isnt adjusted properly..

I agree it is likely related to clutch adjustment. I recently tightened the nuts on the cable at the transmission end. It worked well for a week or two, now has recurred. The clutch pedal does not have too much play. Is it possible that the clutch adjustment is too tight? Or could the problem lie at the other end of the cable, or within the clutch itself?? I am about to put the car on jack stands and look around. Any help is appreciated.

Well, I just tighnened the clutch cable. The lock nut was tight. Now it shifts perfectly, however, i am running out of adjustment threads. i am concerned that something will loosen, and I'll have to tighten it as I did two weeks ago. We'll see.

If I may add, check the cable at the pedal cluster, you can shorten that section, but enough not to bind on the pivot. This would take up some slack on the cable.
