altenator belt adjustment

What is the correct delflection for the altenator belt on my 2.8 race motor?

I've got three "how to" books,
Two of them (early 911) say 10-15 mm and the other ( 1984-1989 carrera)) says 5mm.

Did this dimension change via evalution of the motor?

Thanks,
Tom B.

If you can grab the belt midway between the two pulleys and twist it 180 degrees, it's just about right.

5mm seems awful tight. All that tension is pulling on your alternator bearings. Given that the distance between the crank pulley and the alternator pulley should be pretty similar with 2.7-3.2, I would go with the 10-15mm (1/2 inch)

Yes, I know that seems and feels tight to me too.

I was in the 10-12mm range starting out and that seemed OK , but I took out one of the three shims now its kinda too tight.

Rather than risk an altenator bearing I'll go back to three shims.

Thanks for the input.
