Did i blow the engine

I just put in a new fuel filter in my 3.0 liter today because the car was stalling after about 3 or 4 minutes idling. It seemed to fix the problem then I took the car for a ride and it felt like I had a seized caliper on the front driver side brake, next thing i know is there is a hell of a cloud of white smoke in my rear view mirror so I imediately pull over and turn it off. Temperature guage was about 190-195. When I try to start it all it does is turn over but blows smoke out the bottom of the engine. What do you guy's think??????

Take a picture of where that smoke is coming from.

The smoke and feeling like a seized caliper should have nothing to do with the filter. Did you knock loose a wire or crack a old and brittle hose? Anything leaking? What year car?

I did forget to mention that I did turn the adjustment screw on the carb which seems to have brought up the idle a little bit, my neighbour seems to think that it is the fuel air mixture screw. I did get the car running and brought it home where it is smoking a little from the drivers side exhaust and after 10 minutes idleing it is still smoking. I turned that screw back to it's original position. The car is a 1977 and i believe the engine is a 1978 3.0 liter

Did you change the oil before this happened?

RWebb 08-19-2011 12:25 PM

year of your car?

not stock if a 3L with carbs so describe it completely

did you turn the motor over by hand?

how long since it was modified?

No I was just about to take it to a friend to change the oil, just received the oil filter and bought the oil today. I am pretty sure it was the air fuel mixture screw I was playing with that caused this. Now I get smoke out of the drivers side exhaust pipe and if the car stalls I have a hard time getting it to start so I obviously have the fuel/air mixture set wrong

Motor is not modded, just chain tensioners and headers to a WICKED EXHAUST system. Cis fuel system

No carb(s) on a 3.0L. They were all CIS, stock.

Are you trying to say that you fiddled with the mixture screw on the CIS? ...and it ran fine before that?

tazzieman 08-19-2011 04:11 PM

Please give an exact timeline of the problem.
Did it (stalling at idle problem) start suddenly , was it purchased in that state , or after you(or someone else) had done something else to the engine? Have you done other tune up items?

Did you alter the CIS mixture screw before you changed the filter?

Are there any vacuum leaks?

I'm sure the engine is fine...just needs a mechanic au fait with CIS to take a look and analyse the mixture. A logical approach will solve almost any issue.

Yes I did fiddle with the mixture screw after I changed the fuel filter. (SHOOT ME NOW) I changed the fuel filter because it would only idle for about 3-4 minutes then it was gasping until it stalled. If I was driving the car and was coming to a stop it would die. Now I have it idling good but I have smoke out of the drivers side exhaust only. I used to get water droplets before for a few seconds and now it is spitting out gas, Drivers Side Only

I dunno, did ya burn yer lips on the exhaust?

Best to get an exhaust analyzer and get the mix right.....
