both door handles broken - locked out

Hi All,

my passenger side outer door handle is brokes since quite a while and I always wanted to replace it.... Now the driver side outer handle is broken as well and I am locked out.

Any idea hot to get in again without destroying a window???

Many thanks in advance!

If a coupe the rear side windows can be pried out relatively easy. Seen it done several times at the track, seen it posted as a relatively easy way to get into locked car.

thanks for the suggestion!! Yes, its a coupe. Do you know where to find a step by step on how to take out the rear side window?

TIA

This happened to me soon after I loaded my car on a trailer. Passenger was broke when bought, and then that little 'click' noise on driver side. Trailered home to wisconsin from new mexico, all the while trying to figure out how to get into the car!

I abandoned the rear window option due to rubber was a bit hard (arizona sun damage). So, went out and bought a 3/4 inch hole saw, from memory I think that was the size. With the arbor bit lined up in the center of the key, I drilled out the locking device. Was able to then use a flat bladed screwdriver to push in the spring loaded rod. Door opened. Not for the faint of heart, if you want to reuse the original door key! But, I had a set of replacement locking door handles with a new key, and now have two keys on the key ring. No big deal to me.

I would just cut the seal and remove the front windsheild. It will cost you a new gasket but you probably need a new one anyway.

Also works with the rear window and quarter glass.

No damage to the car with this method.

Many thanks for the great suggestions!!

I think my first option is to take out the rear side window. Do you know where I can potentially find a step by step how to?

Cheers
Jurgen

Call your towing service or just pay for a visit. Those guys have experience getting into just about everything.

Awesome idea! This is how I would do it.

But then I need a new seal anyway.

same thing happened to me when I got my 914.

I paid a locksmith to open the door with a slim-jim (device they slide down into the door to unlatch the mechanism) and my insurance company reimbursed me. Might be cheaper, quicker, easier than removing a window......

you can buy a flat pouch with a hand pump bulb from tool trucks, etc, that will slip in the top rear of your door frame and hold it out so you can slip in a long tool to turn the lock knob. i use a long 3/8 metal brake line, bent just right so it catches the ribs on the knob. coat hangers are too flexy.

If you are a AAA member they provide locksmith as part of your membership fee, or at least they used to. I found this out too late when I locked myself out of a running car I was working on in my driveway (I cut open the cab top to get in).

On most cars, you can just slide a coat hanger with a hooked end between the window and the door panel. Wiggle, turn and pull, repeat. Usually works best close to where the door handle is. You are aiming for the latch mechanism, or the pull rod between the handle and the inside door pull. Often only takes a minute of trying. If you need, you can drive a small wedge of wood in to hold a gap open for you.
