What is the correct alternator output for a '77 S Targa?

When I had a Pre-Purchase inspection, the mechanic noted the alternator output was only 30 amps instead of 60 amps.

The seller brought the car back to his mechanic who will replace the unit (It was re-manufactured.) but the mechanic says it may still be only 30 amps output. "This is enough to charge the battery because these old cars don't use much electricity."

Is 30 amps ok?

Thanks for your help.

That mechanic has <b><i>'Bats in his Belfry!' </b></i>

The '77 should have a 980 Watt, 70 Amp alternator with external regulator! Prior to '75-back-to-'69 ... they were 770 Watt, 55 Amp alternators, and the really early models had 490 Watt, 35 Amp ratings.

So, just WHERE do you suppose the bat harbinger got his numbers? Thin air, maybe? I don't suppose he has a clue what A/C, fog lights, and H1 headlamps with 130 Watt bulbs, and a 400 Watt sound system wopuld require of an alternator ... or, does he???

Sounds to me like your seller needs a different mechanic!
