don't really need clutch spring???

question:

my wrench has just finished replacing my clutch cable on my '74 911. the 'clutch spring' (linear spring associated with the shaft housing both the clutch and brake pedals...not the round-shaped helper spring) also broke. he says i can go ahead and drive for now and i can order the spring, do it myself or have him do it. he talked like it was no big deal to drive it in the meantime without. is this okay? he says that basically the inch or so of travel you get with the clutch before it begins to engage is what the spring supplies; without it, the pedal is essentially resting against this resistance point without engaging the clutch until depressed. just thought i'd double check some other opinions on this matter. thanks for all your help! :)

Yes you can run without it. But do replace it asap. Your clutch will be heavier without it and as he says it provides that bit of slack at the top, ensuring the pedal isn't causing partial engagement.
