which titanium rod is this ?

I just aquired a set of 4 titanium rods with part#
912.103.01100
T A74 TIA L7MO4
27193 f

I guess these are for a 912 but never heard of a factory titanium rod for a 912 but there is only a set of 4 and the part# starts with 912. Factory race parts ? Worth much ?

Porsche Crest

Kurt,

You may want to sit down ... and get a glass of water or stronger refreshment ...

'912' parts that you are talking about had 356 part numbers ... 616 was the major number for engine parts, and the rods were 616.103.012.02.

On the other hand, to the matter at hand ... the only '912' project that ever had Titanium connecting rods with those numbers, undoubtedly, was the legendary 917!!!

Maybe a couple of period ads wil jog your memory ...

Better put them under glass! Now, all you need is a couple of 'wheel' end tables!

And ... I'm sure Andial can confirm the part number validity! Or, maybe Roland has some contacts ...

BTW, I saw Jo Siffert drive the 917PA in the top pic ... in that seldom seen exact nose configuration, to a 4th place finish, in spite of a failed cooling fan ... at Bruce Mc Laren's last race 9 Nov 1969 at College Station TX!!! Glorious noises that flat-12 machine made!

Or for another $70K you could build yourself a motor.

Good eyes, Tom! Well, I guess we know what company was contracted with to make the 917 rods, now!!!

No, Kurt, it takes 12 rods for a 917 engine! Well, if you ignore the flat-16 version that was built and tested, nut never raced!

917's were flat 12, essentially 2 911 engines connected at the flywheel if my memory serves me.

Not that it matters...... but it looks like that con rod had a spun bearing.

does four make a set? depends...does the center to center distance equal that of a 912 rod? and does the width of the rod equal the width of a 912 to rod? what about the clearance between the case and rod when the rod is at BDC? If you have clearance and the dimensions are on... then ....you have the FIRST set of 912 Ti con rods!

Nice idea. There are no spun bearings or overheating at all. To the eye they look perfect. Got the spec`s? I called andial and porsche motorsports and got nowhere. BTW if you look in the pic I posted you can still see the imprint of the bearing part# on the journal.

spec's ? for 917 rod or 912 rod?..... I have neither.

However, for you budget minded builders out there I think the 289 ford v8 rod comes very close to the 911 rod.

I'd swear by the color of that big end surface and the marks that the bearing had spun..... but then again you're alot closer than I am.

Porsche Crest Ti rods...

Also, not positive, but I think Porsche used Ti rods in the 906, 910, 907, and 908 cars as well. Just not sure about the 912 part number. In any case, nice find! Let us know if you confirm the origin.

Yes the rod bolts are as light as plastic. They too are titanium. You know what else makes this find even better is that the guy says he has lots more parts for porsche and he`s coming to my shop tomorrow. BTW he also sold me a K29 turbo and a 12 cylinder mechanical injection pump which looks like 911 pump but longer with some trick adjustable pulley on it. Here`s a pic of the rod bolt from the ti rod, and the turbo unit

Its best not for me to ask but this guy said they belonged to his deceased uncle bill. Personally thats all I need to hear to be happy. I do however beleive him because he is a clean looking late 40`s professional looking guy. You got to laugh that he insisted on $300.00 for the turbo and let the rods go for only $50.00. I look foward to seeing him tomorrow as if you couldnt tell.

sorry two oh but there just too cool to sell that cheap. I know I will never use them but if you held it in your hand you would want to keep them too. Very Very light. I would bet 1 rod bolt would run you $100.00 if they are still available.
