Jim,
Looking at this list: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/596183-cv-axle-cross-reference.html I don’t see a mix of pieces that will work. At first I thought there was the SWB axle (correct) with the ’75.5-’85.5 100 CV joints (not). These CV joints have a different internal spline. I suspect the CV joints may be 914 (4 or 6, they are different). I don’t have the 914 spline count at hand. Interesting ‘make-do’ collection of parts. Clearly the inner race is ‘thicker’ than the original SWB CV joint. If that bolt is Locktite in place, I see no reason that won’t work. The wear points are where the balls run on the inner and outer races, the balls themselves and the sides (next to ball) of the cage. “How much” wear is subjective until you see failed surfaces or a cracked cage. An issue may be that the centerline of the transmission axle flange is 10 mm closer to the engine than the 901. This makes these short axles run at more of an angle (like with LWB but opposite direction). We need to add the two 914 CV joints (914-4 and 914-6) to Tom’s list (link above). There are some other details that need clarification: the axle labeled “Turbo” is way too long. The 930 Turbo has a short (but beefy 108 mm CV joint) axle. This is the exact situation where we need a perfect ‘list’ to sort this out. Best, Grady |
Ok,
I’ve sent the flywheel out for resurfacing, and ordered a power clutch, CV joint boots and a bunch of bits and pieces. I got a new question: I’ve removed the shift fork plate and the fork is nice and secure. Should I be able to shift the tranny with all the fluid out and it on the bench? I’ve tried to move the shift arms with my fingers and also tried it with the plate back in place. Nothing will budge. I haven’t used a lot of force…yet that is. The answer is probable obvious, just not to newbie me. Also: after cleaning the tranny, the clutch disengagement shaft does not rotate as freely as I think is should. Should this be removed, cleaned and greased or can I lube it in place? Thanks, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315507316.jpg |
Grady,
I took you advice and used a small level and applied just a bit of force on the shift forks and I could get the tranny into neutral from 4th. How it got into 4th is a mystery but no matter, it seems to be shifting fine. Now I wait for the part to come in which should take another week or so. Thanks for all the help, Jim |
I see this is certainly not a new thread but couldn't resist reading it.... I've owned my
71 911S Targa since 1977. It is still pretty nice and has been quite trouble-free and dependable. What caught my eye here was the name GRADY CLAY. I just want to say 'Hi' and thank you, Grady, for advice you gave me on the phone back in the 1980s, I believe. I recall you being in Colorado at the time. Are you possibly the same fellow? If so you have been a "guru" for a long time! jvm |
