Pressure Relief Springs

The Bentley says both my main oil pressure relief spring and the safety pressure relief spring should be 2.75" long. One is about 2.67" long and the other is about 3.5" long. Obviously Bentley is wrong. How long should my main pressure relif spring be? 3.5" of something else?

And is my safety pressure relieve spring really too short. So what if it relieves pressure at 7 bar or even 6 bar, when it should be 8? Just less danger to my oil cooler.

Bonus Questions: Is my 35 degree temp sensor (the one on the breather cover plate) supposed to rattle? Mine rattles, does yours? What are those nuts holding my breather plate and intermediate shaft plate on? They take a 10mm socket.

BTW, I nearly had a heart attack. In the bag of gaskets was an "Internediate Shaft O-Ring." And a gasket for the cover plate. There is no place behind the cover plate to put an o-ring, and I knew I had installed no such thing inside the case. So I thought I missed an o-ring that was supposed to go inside the case somewhere. Until I noticed it is for Carreras. Whew!

Long spring is supposed to be 86.0 mm, and short one ... 70.0 mm!

Maybe this diagram will be helpful ...

Indeed, that is helpful. Thanks, Warren.

I also want to know what kind of nuts hold my small plates on, such as breather cover, intermediate shaft cover, etc. The nut takes a 10mm wrench. M4? M6? M8?

I'll just assume that my temperature (mounted in the breather cover plate) is not supposed to rattle internally.

Super Jim,

Sensors that rattle go into my 'collection' ... others would put them in 'File 13' ...

M6 nuts are normally 10 mm accross the flats ... except on GM cars, where the ones on one side of the vehicle are 11 mm ... and 10 mm on the other side??? But, maybe that was only from the Van Nuys plant that had the worst quality control in the entire industry!

I don't recommend keeping relief springs that are 1 mm shorter than spec in use ... the down side to relief valves opening sooner ... is that some of that critical #6 bearing oil supply gets dumped into the sump instead of going to its' intended destination! Your oil cooler is good to at least 150 psi, assuming that winter salt hasn't been eating at it!
