How to lubricate door mechanism?

When I open my driver door, the opening handle doesn't spring back so the door doesn't shut.

What is the procedure for lubricating the mechanism?

Can it be done without taking the door apart?

Thanks

You MAY be able to get some lubricant into the mechanism without removing the door panel but it probably won't do much.

The best practice is to remove the door panel so you can get right at the handle mechanism and lubricate all of the moving bits. It's not that difficult and doesn't require any special tools. You'll need some "allen" wrenches, pliers, and a phillips screwdriver.

The best advice. Do it right...

Just as a side note: Try to keep all of the moisture barrier in one piece and take care removing the screws and clips. Don't scar any of the plastic plugs or fittings. Be gentle with a pick.
It's also a good idea while you in there to check the wiring and clean and lubricate the window mechanism. A little maintenance makes a big difference.
Too many of these cars have been ruined by careless people trying to cut corners.

Did a search for a step by step on how to remove sc door panel. Found just some vague instructions. Anyone know a good thread or can offer a step by step? Will check my bentley book when I get home. Thanks

Haven't done it in years, but: Remove two screws that hold the top door panel piece, one fore, one aft (with door open). Removing this will reveal two allen bolts that hold the top of the door handle on. Go ahead and remove those, and unclip the actual pull rod out of the actual door handle pull - It should push out towards the top. One screw holds the front mount of the rubber pocket lid. Remove and pull the lid out of its rear mount. There should be a screw in either the back or the front of the bottom of the door handle that attaches the door pocket to it. Remove that, and the screws along the bottom of the door pocket. Taking the pocket off, should reveal the bottom allen bolt(s) that hold the door handle on. Remove those. Pry out the center cap of the door locker knob. I think there is a bolt there that you can remove to remove the knob. Pry out the window switches and remove the wires (note which way they connect). That should be pretty much it.

Sometimes the plastic clips that the door pull connects with can be brittle and break. PP should have new ones if you need them.

I found there was no play in the power window switch cables and left them attached, propping the door card open (on the sill) so I could access the lock mechanism Even then a terminal became disconnected and it was a right royal PITA reattaching it. Maybe the window switch comes apart like in a 924 , but mine seemed to only install from the interior side.

So unless you have clear access to the PWS I would be careful about detaching the terminals. The lubrication of the door mechanism is however a doddle and you'll love the result!

i had this same problem...i took the entire door apart, removed the entire assembly, soaked them in some simple green over night, removed and scrubbed them...

they were caked in dirt and grit...used some lithium grease / spray,...everything has worked perfectly for two years so far...

i had a TON of dirt and grim caked on mine and i think that is what was causing it...
