G50 Disassembly

Hi guys,
I'm pulling the case apart on my G50 to replace the gaskets and have run into a snag, literally.
I have the case separated, but it seems to be fetching up on something near the shift rod and will only come apart about 1.5".
Any of you guys know what I'm missing here?

Did you remove the reverse light switch and pin?

irobertson 09-04-2011 08:31 AM

Switch, yes, but not the pin.
Thanks

irobertson 09-04-2011 09:03 AM

That did it Dan.
Can't believe that one wasn't obvious to me.
Late night brain fade. LOL

The mating surfaces of the case are oxidized, and the gaskets just lifted right off, no adhesion at all.
This explains why the thing was seeping oil.

Thanks again

This is something I might be doing when I re drop my '88's 3.2 to work on some leaks. Is there any advice on the gasket material or process to ensure no leaks?

The gaskets are just paper thin anyway and can deteriorate with time. A good gasket sealant like Loctite 574, Curil T, or Permatex Aviation Gasket Sealant (brown sticky goop) would do just fine as a replacement for the pesky, fragile paper gaskets.
