Shopping for a/c gauges have questions....

Hi guys I am shopping for a/c gauges and have a few questions.
Is it possible to find gauges that I can use with r12 and r134?
Do I need the gauge scale to show r12 and r134?

Gauge sets will have adapters for R134. At least the Robinaire I am familiar with. Pressure is pressure. The gauges will tell you the pressure. You need a graph that shows pressures where R12 and R134 liquify (from being pressurized) at a given condenser pressure. Then from this table/graph you can determine if your system is working ok.

The two refrigerants have different properties. R12 evaporates at a lower temp than R134 and is much more efficient.

Edit - If you want to get down with your bad self, go to the MACS web site and sign up, study and take (and pass - open book) their EPA 609 test and you can buy R12 legally. I just bought a sealed 30 pound tank of Dupont Igloo R12 for $325 on EBAY. I had to drive to the guys house as he would not ship but I got ten years of R12 in my hip pocket at a cost of eight dollars a can. All this talk about Freeze 12 blah blah. Take the test and you can buy R12 cheaper than R134, which is NOW 14 bucks a can.

i had a hard time finding an adapter to convert r12 to 134 threads. my vacuum pump has the older r12 type threads and when i bought a set of gauges for 134, i had to get an adapter to convet the "squared" off 134 threads to the old stuff.

i found a set of gauges at advance that did both r12 and 134. the hoses where the r12 type but screwed onto fittings for 134.

i stopped using the gauges for both r12 and 134. i did not think it was a good idea to use them for both.

i saw the ones in advance te other day for around $80-90.

You are really supposed to change the hoses also to keep the oil isolated but I'm not sure that s really necessary.
