cone screw torque on shift coupler
Bentley ( '84 targa) says 23nm or 17 ft/lbs of torque on the cone set screw for the shift coupling, (which is the exact same as they specify for the large bolt on the shift coupler clamp) is it just me or does this seem like way too much torque for this tiny set screw into the diecast aluminum threads?????? Does this set screw really need to be in that tight, esp. if using loctite?

cone screw torque on shift coupler
I just snug them up. Some have a hole in the head for safety wire that way you don't need it so tight.

I've always just snugged mine up tight, by feel.......with a little loctite...........never had a problem.

Snug is fine and less than 17 ft.lbs. Safety wire ensures it stays in place.

Sherwood, I've seen the safety wire on the hexbolt set screws, is it feasible on the allen head set screw? Don't have it in front of me, but there is a bit of the threaded area sticking out. Or........do you wire in a short piece of an allen key that has a hole drilled in it?

Luckily the screw is on top and has alot of space to walk out of if at all.
Sherwood, when you get a chance I would love to see that safety wire set up ![]()

I believe my shift coupler set screw is merely screwed in. I was only answering a question about applying safety wire in this application. However, the shift lever ball cup receptacle is safety wired, as they all should be from the factory. Sherwood |

My shift lever ball cup is not safety wired, it had the same cone set screw in it as the shift coupler. Could you explain why it would be more important to have this safety wired?
