cone screw torque on shift coupler

Bentley ( '84 targa) says 23nm or 17 ft/lbs of torque on the cone set screw for the shift coupling, (which is the exact same as they specify for the large bolt on the shift coupler clamp) is it just me or does this seem like way too much torque for this tiny set screw into the diecast aluminum threads?????? Does this set screw really need to be in that tight, esp. if using loctite?

I just snug them up. Some have a hole in the head for safety wire that way you don't need it so tight.

Snug is fine and less than 17 ft.lbs. Safety wire ensures it stays in place.

Sherwood, I've seen the safety wire on the hexbolt set screws, is it feasible on the allen head set screw? Don't have it in front of me, but there is a bit of the threaded area sticking out. Or........do you wire in a short piece of an allen key that has a hole drilled in it?

If there's enough meat on the head for a drilled hole-through, it's doable (albeit internal hex head bolts are usually of harder material). This is not a high vibration/high load area, but a loose/non-existent set screw would be an issue. Not sure how a hex key (L-shaped?) would prevent a fastener from rotating unless the key were to butt up against something to fix that position in place.

Jim,
I believe my shift coupler set screw is merely screwed in. I was only answering a question about applying safety wire in this application.

However, the shift lever ball cup receptacle is safety wired, as they all should be from the factory.

My shift lever ball cup is not safety wired, it had the same cone set screw in it as the shift coupler. Could you explain why it would be more important to have this safety wired?

Evidently, not all of them have a drilled set screw in this location. Mine does ('69). I think the fore-aft, L-R motion of the shift lever might be a factor in it loosening.
