Guards red bumper cover and paint match

Hi,

I am thinking about having my front bumper repainted, it is full of rock chips. It is an 84 3.2 that is guards red and I was wondering if I would run into paint match issues. I understand that it would definitely be an issue for other panels but maybe bumpers are different (visually I mean).

Has one of you ever had a guard red bumper repainted?

I am assuming it would be base + clear as opposed to the rest of the car being single stage. Is that an issue?

Thanks,

A competent body shop should be able to match the paint with the caveat that if your current paint is faded or oxidized, that is a different story. Competent does not mean Maaco or a cut-rate independent shop. Competent means a shop that specializes in repairing and refinishing higher-end vehicles and understands picky owners like me.

This is my ex-993. I had the bumper cover and hood repainted because of rock chipping when the car was 13 years old. The rest of the car had excellent paint and the match was perfect.

Since your car has single stage paint, the bumper should be refinished in single stage as well.

Any decent body shop can do the bumpers and match them no problem. The bumpers have smaller reflective surfaces than say a sunroof panel, and are broken up by the rubber smile and protection strip. It's really not an issue, but the whole car needs to go in to the shop when the bumpers are done (i.e. don't carry the bumper in without the car expecting a respray perfect match based solely on color code.)

Bumper has spacing all around so a slight mismatch will not be too obvious. Jack's car does not have that luxury.

Talk to the painter and ask how they match paint. Do they have a computer camera?. That really helps.

A higher end shop that actually shoots Glasurit 22 line will know how match it - even without a camera. Old 21 line can be brought back to life on the fenders by a good paint buffer (in the right hands) and that will assist the match with the bumper. A picture of the existing paint would be a good thing.

Shouldn't be a big deal at all. I painted mine myself with no color adjustments to the paint and it looks fine.
