Knee pads

Hi,
I was thinking of making my 1970 911T ash tray delete. I was curious if using an old SWB knee pad would be the way? Is there much difference from going from 2 knee pads to 1? If so, what would be the way to make an ash try delete knee pad setup?

TIA,
Brent

Can't answer your question. But it is easy to pull the ashtray and make a small aluminum bracket to hold the upholstered ashtray cover in the proper position. You can mock it up in cardboard then bend to fit. My car has three switches underneath; this makes a good place to hide them.

Any chance of getting you to post a foto of this?

I would love to use it for something - cell phone holder perhaps?

Here are two photos taken from underneath looking up. Not very helpful I'm afraid. The idea is to mount a piece of aluminum with 2 small screws/nuts to the frame behind the ashtray. Use these to attach a small, maybe 4 x 4, piece of aluminum to the frame. Bend the aluminum into a "C" or "U" shape so that you can bolt the ashtray cover to it. Not easy to describe but not hard once you start looking at it. You can see in the photos that I then added another small aluminum bracket to hold my toggle switches. You can use cardboard to fool with the shapes until you get it right. The thin aluminum can be bent so that the ashtray cover looks perfectly stock. Paint everything flat black. Give us a picture when you finish the project!

Here's a pic of my SC with an older one-piece knee pad (Ebay purchase) installed. I don't recall if it was from a pre '69 model or not. Not all the studs lined up so I had to do a little bit of hole enlarging via a file.
