install engine pad in 30 minutes without engine drop
My engine pad has long since departed and my 87 does not need an engine drop for other projects. The old glue look was killing me. I know some other pelicans have installed a pad using glue without an engine drop, but I was looking for an easier way
I purchased a light weight engine pad from our host and glued 20 small round magnets on the back side of the pad. I allowed the glue to dry over night. This morning I removed the air cleaner cover and nothing else. I slid in the pad and worked it around some hoses and wires and 30 minutes later it was installed. To me it looks like it was glued in. I will see how long this pad stays attached. If it does stay in place this is a better answer than glueing it in. When the pad goes bad I will take out the old and put in a new one This application method may be old news, if so sorry for the long winded post. |
Great idea! I would take it one step further: The magnets may eventually pull away from the padding. Glue the magnets to the padding, then glue a vinyl(?) backing over the magnets, making the pad a sort-of "magnet sandwich".

Great idea!! I need to replace my pad soon, and you have given me an idea based on magnets.
How about the thin brown flexible magnetic stuff they use for refrigerator magnets and the like. I have seen it in many widths from 1/2" to 6"s plus. It usually comes with "stickum" on the backside, but I would probably use extra glue as well to attach to the back of the pad. I think if you covered most of the back of the pad with the magnet "stuff", it would hold quite well and replacement would be a snap!! Thanks for getting my "creative juices " flowing!! Grant ' |
What a great solution! Sure makes it easier than scraping old glue off when fitting a new pad.

Danny_Ocean I had the same concerns about the magnets puling away from the backing. The pad is very light and there is nothing puling on it except gravity. If a few magnets pull away or it starts to sag, I will pull the pad back and glue a few more magnets on. If they all fail I will pull the pad out, I am out $70 and 30 minutes of my time. Then I will know why Porsche did not do it from the factory this way. If it falls apart I will swallow my pride and post it

What a unique idea. Never crossed my mind. I droped the engine to do it, along with some other things. Outstanding.
