VIN # / Engine #
What is the relationship between the VIN and the enginer #. How do you determine if the engine is the original engine?

You can determine if the engine is in the right range for the manufacture date of the chassis, but the only way to determine if it's the engine delivered with the car is to order a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche. It's expensive, something like $100. Follow this link:
Certificate of Authenticity - Owner Services - Porsche Service - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG Cheers

I was fortunate to find the original owner's manual in my SC. It had the engine number written in below the chassis number.
