Can someone point out head studs?
Next week will be my first valve adjustment so I thought I'd check my head studs while the covers are off. I'm trying to visualize where the studs are.
I have Wayne's book and on page 50 there's a picture of the lower valve cover removed but I don't see any head studs. I see valve cover bolts, what I assume are cam tower nuts, valve clearance adjustment bolts and oil return tubes. I'm guessing that the head studs (with hex nuts) are towards the bottom, hidden behind the gasket? Are there 6 under each valve cover? Intake side towards the top and the exhaust side towards the bottom? |
They hold the heads onto the case, the ones that are broken will be rattling aound under the rockers when you take off the valve covers. Count the bolt heads, should be 12 on each side.

Lowers are the usual ones that snap on 3.0s. on 2.7s uppers and lowers can pull, and need to be cecked for tightness.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks, Walter_Middie!
I didn't realize that they were that far down in there. Looks like the outter two are hard to get to. |
On 3.2 they are the 10MM Barrel nuts. Make sure you tighten in a gradient-star fashion. gradient torque of 30%,60%, 80% of Spec Torque. The pros suggest 80% max as not to snap the studs or pull them.
Are you doing this to stop a leak? |
I'm just checking them while I'm adjusting the valves. Don't know that I'll even put a wrench on them other than to verify that they're not broken.
