I have some minor rust. Thoughts on my repair methods?
I have two or three, small (.5" diameter) rust spots on the sill of my '86. The rubber sill protector has loosened quite a bit and that's the reason.
My plan is to buzz the rust off with a Dremel and appropriate bit(s). Once bare, I'll paint on some cold zinc primer and then some black epoxy. These spots are completely under the rubber sill protector so I'm more concerned with a permanent fix for the rust than I am making it look pretty. I do have two questions. Does anyone know a good adhesive remover to get rid of the old stuff without affecting the paint? Also, what's a good new adhesive to glue the sill protector back down? Thanks. |
3M Adhesive Remover - buy at Walmart in a spray can. Plan of attack on rust sounds good.

I'd suggest you use POR19 (I think its POR19,, its a paint over rust product, any decent autoparts store (napa, carquest) will have it) after you really clean the area off well. From what I know POR has additives that neutralize any remaining rust (and you will have some remaining).

I use Eastwood's Rust Converter and then cover it with POR15 for an extra bit of protection from future oxidation but that may be overkill.
