Question 911sc Lock Tumblers

I have an 82 911SC Targa...

I use 3 keys - 1 for ignition, 1 for driver's door, 1 for passenger door and glove box

I want to rekey my tumblers to reduce the number of keys. My question is did the car originally have seperate ignition and door keys? Also there is a tumber in the side (above where the locking mechanism hits the striker) of the drivers door, what is it for? is it an extra? For setting the car with a single key is it easiest to keep the ignition unchanged and rekey the doors and glove box? I think I may keep one key for the ignition and another for the locks.

Thanks

I think the "extra" lock in the door jam is for a factory alarm.

at least initially, (when car was new) single key for both door and ignition. radcon is correct - the 'lock' in the drivers door is the alarm which has a separate key.

there was also a valet key, which would work the doors and ignition but not the glove box or the lock in the front trunk handle.

can't help with which is easiest, though I suspect door locks may be easier than ignition

i'm currently trying to do this on my 86.

i would say definitely change the door tumblers. if you find a source for the rekey pins let me know!!

i'll probably end up resorting to filing the pins already there

When my car was restored, I had the doors rekeyed (spelling?). My brother (car's restorer) had spare pins which made it easier. Definately cheaper than changing ignition!
I knew someone who rekeyed a BMW and they just used pins from the passenger door to make the driver's side work. The passenger door still locked, it just had fewer pins.

The doors are by far the easyer ones to rekey, biggest hassle is getting to the door handle to remove it. I've done a couple sets just keep every real clean, be patent, take you time and use a high grade grease (white) when everything goes back together. As for parts I believe Pelican sells a rekey kit.
