Shifter boot needed after console delete

Hey guys,

Today I deleted my center console in my '89 targa and would like to keep a shifter boot, however there is a large "triangular" bracket at the base of the shifter. Can this be removed without harm? Or is there another boot I can buy to just cover the whole base?

Thanks,

PS I searched the forums and found where others had deleted their consoles out of earlier cars, but none seem to have the bracket a the base.

Can you post a pic?

I would like to see the bracket, if I'm thinking the same thing you are then the "bracket" is covered by the carpet. If you pull the center carpet piece out you will see a hole on one side for the seatbelt receptacles, a long rectangular whole for the shift boot, and then another hole for the shifter.

The original shift boot was tucked into the carpet through a hole in the console if I remember correctly. The problem in removing the console is that I don't think there is a borer for the hole in the carpet that holds the shift boot. (I think, its been a while) This makes it look rather incomplete. I had a guy make a border for me. Pics would make this really easy.

Google search: "911 sc shift boot" you will see a boot with grey stripes. That is mine. You should be going for a look like that without the center console. I have an rs carpet kit, so it may be a bit different but I hope it helps.

Have you considered getting new carpet? The part under the console all these years tends to be several shades off of the sun exposed parts.

Here you go, I found that the bracket is not removable, its part of the shifter assembly--at least it doesn't appear removable.

So custom boot?

Base is not big enough in diameter.

Have a good upholstery shop make you a leather or vinyl boot to match your seats.

Shouldn't be too expensive.

interesting... I don't remember my sc being like that at all.

I don't know if a boot will be a solution, I'm almost sure that nobody makes them that size now. Even if you custom make it, that boot will be huge.

I believe most of us have a circular base that the boot goes around. I wonder if yours is how the g50 works?

The only thing I can think of is to order another center carpet piece with a smaller diameter hole to accommodate the boot. No glue or light amount of glue so it can be removed easily for work.

When you shift into from neutral over to the 5th or reverse gears, does it move freely over? or do you have some spring type resistance?

That's the g-50 box - and yep, that's what it looks like.

I've seen some just use a leather boot with anchoring around the perimeter

or just use one of these... :0
