Problem adjusting fan
My fan belt seems a little loose. Since I have problem with the engine running hot I thought it was a good idea to tight-up the pulley. I found that there was non spacers left on the inside, with other words I can not tighten it. It was 3 spacers on the outside, beneath the bolt.
Any ideas? Wat is wrong? |
I don't think you have all of your spacers. I believe that there are supposed to be 6. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Good luck! |
Belt is likely stretched beyond adjustment. With zero washers between pulley halves, you should then have all six washers on the outside under the pulley nut.
It's possible that not having all 6 washers under the pulley nut allows your pulley halves to wobble/separate, also contributing to belt slippage. Either way, get more washers so you have a total of 6. Belts are so inexpensive you should just replace. And if you're unsure how old the current belt is you should replace. You've already spent more time and effort trying to tighten this thing, now posting on PParts forum than -- probably already cost you more than the purchase price of a new belt. Good luck |

Thanks, I try with a new fan belt then, and all 6 shims in place as a starting point.

Gotta' have all six, for sure...BEST!

When I bought my 84 the belt was really tight, someone had put on the wrong size belt...
|
Very easy to much up a shaft/bearings.......bad tension, so to speak.
Best! Doyle |
I know have all the shims and a new fan belt.
I've placed 5 shims in between and 1 shims outside. The fan belt is now actually to tight, maybe? How tight should it be? By the way, my old fan belt looked like an unoriginal "mc" belt. My new fan belt is the 710 mm original "NARROW V-BELT" I belive. My fan number is: 901 106 101 5R Is this the correct belt? |
Belt.

Five in the middle sounds like a 10mm belt. If you push on the belt with your thumb it should deflect about 1/2 inch. Also, be very certain about the pulley halves alignment. |
Push gently? I am able to push 1/2 inch or rotate 1/2 turn, but with a little pressure on my thumb.
I think I have the 10 mm. Is it wrong? Part number: 99919217650 The pulley halves alignment are a few mm off, I have to have less shims between to push it into perfect alignment, there is like a gap. |
Alternator Belt.

You have the correct belt. Re-check the pulley halves alignment. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317253991.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317254006.jpg |
Seems like the 9.5mm x 710mm is also correct for my -75 2.7L engine.
The pulley halves alignment is straight but the holes doesn't align 100%. I have to have less shims in between to align the holes perfectly. Only then is it possible to have the "nut" go far enough in to be able to "twist" the nut the 2mm to the left to align it 100% with the holes on the other half. |
Have the 9.5mm in order now, I hope the tension will be ok with this one.
|
If the holes don't align, then your pulley 1/2 is likely damaged from running without the proper # of shims. Ask me how I know: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/610056-pulley-alignment-question.html

If your pulley halves have wear similar to what is seen in these pictures, then that wear can cause the misalignment that I think you mention.
If you have such wear, repair will be necessary. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317307659.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317307725.jpg |
I think I have similar wear on mine. What kind of repair? Buy a new pulley halve? Expensive? I now got the 9.5 mm belt and used 5 shims in between, it is still a little to tight.
|
The outer half of the pulley shown I replaced. The inner half with the notch in the "drive cog" (I forget the proper name of the thing) I had welded up, then ground to proper original shape. It seems to work fine with no problems.
The cost for the welding and reshaping was only $15 or $20. Some have said the repair could have been made using J-B Weld, but my experience suggests that J-B does not hold up. A little welding will do it. |
