Shifter alignment blues!
 

Have replaced all the bushings and shifter selector in my 915 trannie. Thought I had the job down cold but am having trouble pinning down the correct position to lock the shifter rod to the new shifter rod coupling.
Interesting drive yesterday when I thought I had it right, only to find in traffic I couldn't quite select 1 or 2 when I wanted to.
Had another go at adjusting it today but it still doesn't feel right.

Any Jedi masters out there that can help with some tips for a beginner? Have done a search on the forum with little luck.

I have found this to be one of those "keep trying till you get it right" things....trouble is each try is like starting all over because simply loosening it up makes it go all screwy and you have to start over....

if you can get a helper to hold the shifter tight against the 1-2 plane and then counter rotate the coupler and shaft using a very lightly clamped vice grip pliers on the coupler and your 2 13mm wrenches in the other hand (one locked against the body of the tunnel) and tighten it

I found that did the trick for me - but took several tries still...now I have it nailed I never want to move it :p

When you get it, or before seperating a coupler-use a scribe to scratch some alignment marks in both adjustment planes, to get you in the neighborhood.

you may want to check the the clutch cable 25mm tolerance. When I first tried to put the shifter in the most upper left corner and tightened down the coupler... it didnt work at all. What worked for me was putting it in 1st gear, loosen the coupler, put the shifter in the upper left corner with the shifter shaft adjacent to the 5th gear gate, tighten the coupler. Now with the bushings and adjusted clutch cable.... she drives real nice and tight.

Re the problem that "each time it's like starting over again", my technique is to put a strip of what we call masking tape (in Australia) around the shaft (the shifter shaft that runs forward out of the box and into the coupler). Position the edge of the tape a couple of mms back from the coupler and, with a pen or pencil, mark the position of the split in the coupler on the tape. Then you have a simple reference to where you started - both fore and aft and left and right - and it is easy to make small adjustments.
