75 911S Throttle linkage problem

A friend has a 75 911S that broke down on the freeway this morning. The engine was running, but did not respond to the throttle. I am going to go with him at lunch and take a quick look.

I am guessing that the throttle linkage is disconnected somehow, or one of the pivots popped off. Is there a common point of failure on the throttle linkage, where I should start looking?

Thanks,

Tom

It's probably one of the ball swivel rod ends that's come loose (excessively worn?) but in the older cars the rubber element coupling could fail causing the linkage to break. The new (upgraded) versions of this coupling have a partial metal housing to keep it together somewhat if the rubber rots so there is not a complete failure. See the below diagram:

Tom,

Check the bellcrank mounted on the stud on the lower driver's side of the 915. #14 in the diagram below ... if socket and rod still attached from rod out of tunnel, and cotter, washer, and bushings all still in place and bellcrank is moveable through a range of motion ... then problem is between bellcrank and engine!

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was something simple, and it was. The rearmost section of rod that connects to the throttle body itself was disconnected, and the rod was just hanging loose. I poped it off, screwed it back in and did a rough adjustment and he was good to go. He was really lucky, of all the connections that could have come loose, that was the easiest to get to and fix.

I did see why it came off, one side had a jam nut to keep things tight, the other side didnt.

If any of the SF Bay area folks saw a blue-green targa sitting at the side of southbound 880 near the Dumbarton Bridge exit, that was his car.

Thanks again,

Tom

Tom,

All of those ball-end sockets are supposed to have a jam but! The majority are regular M5 threads ... but there ARE a couple of Left-Hand threaded, and trhey are very hard to find, except at dealers!!
