Removing lead for welding repair-how?

I'm wrapping up the rust repair of my 73 911T in the parcel panel area, and so far its going ok. The finish requires me to wrap a patch up into the corner of the engine cover opening, which has lead applied in the corners. I would like to remove the lead directly in the path of the repair; I have no need or desire to remove more, its in good shape and the health issues of working with the old lead are well known.
I've removed most of the old lead carefully, but I'm concerned that the residue and remaining smear of lead on the steel might impact my weld. I'm gas welding the repair, with 4140 chrome moly .025 sheet and RG65 bare rod butt welded on to the old panel.

So my question to my fellow Pelicanites is: is there any method of removing the lead residue from the existing panel before I start welding?
Thanks in advance,
Bill S in currently still warm Ohio near Lake Erie

wire brush it off when it's melted, then sand off the remaining smear until it's gone, either by hand or 2" air grinder. it certainly will booger up a weld. you can also blow it off with an air gun when it's melted.
