I go back and forth with the same question on my '85 Cabriolet. I always end up deciding to keep the wing. I think it adds character.

I vote for the clean look Buzi originally intended unless you intend on doing a lot of crazy high speed driving.

paint job
my 75 911 is in the paint shop now and i couldnt decide, so i had a ducktail, 3.0 carrera wing and the stock lid all painted.
its no longer a hobby, its turned into a disorder. but its fun. now if i could only decide which one to put on first. kevin |

didn't you answer your own question?
now's the time to take it off. You can always put it back on easily, if you want. If you don't take it off now, it's harder to do so down the road (will require filling holes and repainting your decklid, or finding a used one and repainting it, etc. etc.) |

Take it off and have it painted separately. That way if you change your mind it will still have a nice coat of paint on it when you put it back. It wont cost much more to paint separately (if anything)

My 88 Carrera targa came with a tail, (yes, all the proper stamps & marks) that I use in the summer, because I do drive faster. With the Carrera tail, anything above 60 is a profit.
I also switch to a stock lid for winter driving, with the wife's help. There are a lot of different tails, depending on how you use you P. Lawrence |

You are funny and yes most of us have gone beyond a hobby. Thank you all. I like without the wing but was afraid since she came stock that I was offending the Porsche Gods. My car is apart with wing, bumpers and hoods painted off the car and looks great. I could not afford to have glass removed so body gets taped. Shop is a restoration body shop owned by a friend so car will look good. Ordering all new rubber and seals tomorrow from Pelican for headlights, taillights, sunroof etc. I am having a hard time spending $300 for a plastic grill. Anybody have a parts car guess I should check the parts forum. Pelican wants $300 for the plastic grill to cover the hole after removing the wing. |

I love the Coupe without the tail / wing. Guess if I had a real 930 then I'd "like" the tail.

You must have a wing. No poster on any kids wall in the 80's has a picture of a 911 without a wing!! My red 81 has a beautiful wing.

To be honest I love having a group of decklids to change back and fourth with the event or mood. Keep and paint it at the same time get a stock "metal" decklid and paint it also. Wings totally change the look and feel in some case of the car; and you don't have to have a Turbo to have a wing on a Porsche. The "ducktail" started it all and still looks great on a Porsche today>GT3RS or any of the versions of the rear wing.

I think they all, except for the very old (early 70s and such) look better with a wing (as long as it is not the tea tray on a narrow body) . . . looks too anemic without.
The above pictured car is a fine example of this - while it looks like a fine automobile, a wing would make it look much more aggressive. Last edited by Ronnie's.930; 09-27-2011 at 06:06 PM.. |
