930 turbo tail on a Carrera deck lid

I'm going through a turbo project on my '87 Carrera, and it continues to go far beyond what I initially intended . Just wondering if a 930 turbo tail would fit on my Carrera deck lid? Any modifications needed?

It'll work. However, you'll need to cut the decklid if you are installing an intercooler.

I'll take some pics tomorrow if I get a chance, I've got a Carrera decklid with tea-tray via the previous owner. The decklid is uncut, the only reason I haven't been worried about changing things (probably back to a whale-tail which I definitely prefer, maybe cutting out the opening) is because I plan on going with a ducktail.

I know I've seen data on this (think it was duck-tail vs. whale-tail though), does anyone know between the whale-tail and tea-tray which is more efficient aero-wise? Just looking at the designs I would assume the whale-tail is the most efficient option of the three, with the tea-tray design being more geared toward providing the intercooler with air as opposed to efficiency specifically, aero is a funny deal though.

So the plan is to install the tail below on a 87 Carrera deck lid and modify (cut) it for intercooler clearance.

I would have to look hard to find the link, but a "graph" has been posted before that shows that the tea tray provided the greatest aero function . . .

Yeah just looked it up myself, I guess "Turbo" means early turbo/carrera, and "3.3 Turbo" is for the tea tray.

Hmmm, guess I'll have to think about it, I was thinking I'd go for the duck or carrera in FG for the weight savings, but it's quite staggering how much better the turbo tail actually tested...didn't remember there being that much of a discrepancy.

Edit: Looking at the pics above I was shocked at how much better the carrera tail still appears, then it occurred to me that the graph only shows reduction of lift as opposed L/D, in that case it isn't so surprising I suppose. I'd still be willing to bet the carrera tail is more efficient. Interesting stuff.

I always thought the Duck Tail had the most straight line DF

Relative to the tea tray and whale tail the duck tail is quite small surface area-wise, I'm sure that's why it doesn't seem to do better. Given it's simple design it's surely the most inefficient.

True, but where it is located & how it is angled, plus, starting with the 964s, the size, placement & angle (look at the side profile of a 964 or 993 when the wing is up) it is almost as if Porsche returned to the Duck. Again, I'm talking straight line down force, not the twisties we all love

I have just installed a similar wing on my Carrera lid. Mine is an RS America tail. I can post a pic tomorrow if you're interested. Works well with intercooler and even has room for a half condenser and fan.

I replaced my ducktail with an IROC tail and picked up 5 seconds PER lap at CA Speedway this weekend. I think there is a reason the factory only used the ducktail for 1 year only....
