Need your help.. Looking for a car and need clarification
 
I have recently sold my 914, 930 and 996TT Cab and now would like to go early again. This is what I am looking for.

1) 356 Outlaw Project or one that is almost complete.
2) 911 or 912 (pre-75.. since I live in CA.) also can have larger motor, RS tribute, hot rod, etc.

In the 912 if I'm not mistaken they have the same motor as a 356 correct or did some 912's have the 2.2 liter?

Also, is the motor like a 911 (transmission in front) and what is the largest motor that will fit in that compartment if I wanted to do 2.4, 3.0, 3.2, etc...

Thanks for the help in advance as i am traveling down a new path and not that familiar with the older models.

Quick answers:

1965-69 912's had 1600cc 4 cyl. that was a variant of the 1964-65 356 SC engine.

1976 912E had a VW Type IV 2-liter engine.

Pretty much any air-cooled 911 engine can be made to fit although you will also want a 911 transmission, preferably a '72-86 "915" version.

911/912/356 have the same powertrain layout...rear engine, transaxle in front.

I've been playing with and wrenching on Porsches for nearly 40 years. My best advice would be to buy a finished or near-finished car unless you have serious mechanical and bodyworking skills and a BIG pile of cash. Even a free old Porsche will get very expensive very fast.

Also, the pre-'76 non galvanized cars can be very prone to rust issues.

If you are buying a 912 and plan to put a 911 engine into it, you'll find the mounts for the engine need swaped out. They are quite different as the 911 is longer than the four cylinder.

Until you do that, all that fits is a four cylinder. We've converted a couple of 912's to 911 drivetrain, not a big deal to do, but it's more than just swapping the engine. It's the mounts (welded), oil reservoir, etc, to put the six where the four was previously.

For a 912, you might also consider a hot rod Type IV (e.g. Jake Raby) four cylinder. No mounts to swap, nice and light, no converting "work" and it will go like stink.

Uhhhh, Bryan.. hope all is ok,

I remember your 87 930 and can't figure out why you parted with.. though I'm sure the 996TT cab is fun.. it just ain't the same.

Regarding your question... I would forget about the 912 entirely. Fun/nice car but will always leave you wanting more! I would either go with the 356 Outlaw or a 69 - 73 and 911. Although there are some really cool modified 74 - 80 911's on the market these days.

The 76 912e is a good candidate but still needs smog in CA.....
