Harness Re-Webbing

Hi,

Are harnesses still being re-webbed? I have two sets, one is a TRW Sabelt 6 point, the other is 5 point M&R. Bothe are expired.

Thanks as always!

Welcome to Professionally Engineered Products sells belts, maybe they can do them or suggest a source. Talk to anyone but Lucas the owner, he's a whack job.

Crow Enterprizes used to take old expired other-brand harnesses and give you credit towards new Crow belts. Apparently they don't offer that anymore.

Crow Belt Recertification

Best thing to do for competition is get a 5 yr. certified FIA belt set. It's cheaper in the long run and less hassle of re-belting every 2 years like NASA requires.

NASA requires new belts every two years? that is pretty extreme.

What I never understood is why nobody ever replaces seat belts in their street cars. They don't last forever. Probably don't even last as long as racing belts.

They only require it for competition. In HPDE and TT you can use "expired" belts and stock 30 yr. old belts are completely fine..... :D

The 2 yr. expiration for standard SFI rated, but not FIA rated, belts is rather standard for competition. It is often hotly debated by a lot of participants. The obligatory "due to UV degradation in open-cockpit cars" is often cited in the rules as to where this requirement comes from. SCCA requires it too- see page 179

....

Nope. Read the rules you regions. In regions of PCA that I've run with, expired belts are no-go.

Actuallly I was referring to NASA only in terms of HPDE & TT (PCA refers to it as DE). Expire & stock belts are fine there. Our PCA region has only recently started looking @ harness expiry.

Get a copy of Trade-a-Plane, or on their website, the airplane trade paper. There are a number of places that rebuild, repair and reweb aircraft seatbelts and harnesses. These are certified parts with specific rules for overhaul and repair. I would guess these requirements would make them pretty easy to get approval for from your local sanctioning body. Bill S

You're right they don't....but they changed the lock design on the male end and they can telll if a belt is original on 70s and 80s belts.

San Diego kicked me out after driving over 100 miles to attend an AX.....still pisses me off.
