Another seal problem
 

After reading Jeff Craddock's problem, I guess I really don't have a problem. But, after a mere 30 years, my car's engine lid seal has cracked & split. It seems to just slide in the tube shaped part of the license plate panel...but can one insert this without pulling muffler, bumperettes, and panel? Or, do I have to pull these parts. I've done muffler replacement, but none of the rest. Any tips or advice appreciated, especially from pre '74 owners who have been there, done that...

If memory serves, I think all you have to do is remove the bumperettes which are held on by 6 M6 head bolts and two self tapping screws just above the muffler. I replaced mine about a year ago and I don't think you'll have any luck replacing the seal with the rear panel attached. The seal requires a lot of "coaxing" to slide into the channel you describe.

You might also want to replace the protective rubber between the license panel and the body while you have the panel off.

If removing the bumperettes, make sure you spray some wd 40 on those bolts a couple days prior . I snapped 2 trying to take those dang bolts out. Just a little extra insurance.

Paul, I've only done this on later car, but rubber attaches the same I think. Plenty of soapy H20 for lube is essential. :cool:

It's actually very easy. Just remove the bumperettes described above,but, you also have a bolt and a nut on each end of the panel that ties it to the bumpers. They may be self tapping as descibed by Ron but on my car they are a nut and a bolt.

Also sometimes the M6 hex screws are covered by nylon plugs.
