where do i start....

when i remove the oil cap the idle remains the same...i think it all started when i installed the pop off valve...i have done the search but might not be specific enough for my problem...thanks in advance for your replies

Is your mixture right? Does the idle vary? Do you have an oil line restrictor?

the idle varies....if i put it in gear and gently let off the clutch and engage it again, the idle returns to normal, but it will eventually go back up to about 2k until i feather the clutch again

Assuming the idle and running was good prior to your installation of the pop-off valve, from what you describe it sounds like you have an air leak. Even a well glued valve could be leaking or possibly the cap is not sealing completely. Did you grind down the ribs in the air box, around the base of the valve, before installing? Possibly you dislodged a vacuum hose during the installation. Double check everything. The high idle, dropping under load then returning to high is typical of an air leak. So is the failure to drop when removing the oil cap, as you know.

First suspect, the newly installed pop-off valve. Secondary suspects are any and all hoses and connections in the immediate area of where you were working.

ok thanks, I will try a better adhesive on the pop-off valve.
