Turn signal housing wire removal
I am attempting to remove the front (& eventually rear) turn signal housings from my 73 911T Got the housing loosened, but I cannot unplug them. Is there a secret handshake I am missing?

They usually connect inside, mark cut and then put in insulated butt connectors.
Oh yeah disconnect the battery.

My 82 had connectors inside the housing. Tough to pull apart, but possible. Reinstallation is a pain to reconnect those wires. To make it easier, I made short (~2 inch) jumpers for the wires as suggested by a fellow Pelican. Patience will be required.

The early style had a "plug in" connector that goes on the bulkhead of the body. They also had two screws that old a plate type of connector onto the light housing itself but many times its so covered up with dirt that you cannot see it.

I never like to hear cutting the stock harness on a long hood.
You can remove the connector from the chassis, and or open up the back and just remove the spade connectors from the tabs. Then clean or repaint. The connector will go back in the fender hole easily with a little dielectric grease. ![]() ![]() ![]()

The top photo that Ed posted shows the rubber plug that goes into the bulkhead. Very easy to remove once you know where it is. Also believe that these housings are for the 1969 and earlier cars as they have the bigger cap that covers the guts. I believe that the 1969 to 1973 versions have a small oval cover that is held on with two screws.
Agree, never like to start cutting harnesses... BTW, beautiful job refurbing them Ed! I did one of mine and it came out nice but not as good as yours!

use a stubby screwdriver to open up the back - IIRC, it is a flat blade
search up a post with my user name on this for some more pics and a pin out if you lose track of what does what this is a terrible place to cut wires and introduce(another) connection that will corrode and cause problems, no matter the damage to the concoursiness of the car I'm not saying this is fun BTW -- it is another Poorly Designed Electrical Thing on German Cars... |
