Another newbie question - what is this?

Hi guys - thanks for the help with that cracked hose I found on the the other thread.

While looking for vacuum leaks I found this - which is just open to the air - which can't be right.

Can anyone tell me what it for and where it is supposed to be connected to? Thanks in advance for the help, much to learn.

I did manage to remove all of this crap that the PO sloppily installed so making some progress.

Isn't that the connection to the BACK of the airbox?

Hi Doyle - just ran the garage and check and yes it does. There is a "Y" connection where a long thin metal tube goes to the air box. One of the "Y" had a hose connected to it but the other junction with the red arrow above is open.

Where should that cut hose (indicated with the red arrow) connect to?

What year is your car?

tdskip 10-06-2011 04:45 AM

'74 but has a Motronic 3.2 in her.

I'm with Doyle - Looks like you're in the vicinity of the drivers side eng bay, but a wider angle pic might help give a better perspective. It could be to your cruise control, but from your other thread, I didn't think you had one.

Hard to tell from the pic, but is it going to a "Y" transition on the lower right? Some cars have a separate vac line to the brake booster, but I don't know which year, so it might be an extra line for your 3.2 in the '74 (was it?). (on edit - 74 - I see now :-)
You could try plugging it for the time being and do the whistle check.

hope this helps.

Hy

I am almost sure itīs the hose for your brake booster in the front.

tdskip 10-06-2011 10:05 AM

Hi guys - thanks for the info. I looks like that it is - that "Y" interaction is on the driver side and goes to the airbox so the connections all match the diagram above. As a matter of honor I did look in the Bentley Service Manual this AM but missed that diagram.

Since this goes to a non-existent booster (since my car is a 1974) I should just cap it, right? Having it open would result in a leak as well as allowing crap into the airbox post filter which can't be a good thing.

Thanks!

It is sufficient to seal the hose with a cap.
Otherwise the engine runs badly because of the leak

tdskip,...just to qualify (as I've been absent),..my experience with my 89 (early days, that is) involved leaving the rear airbox connection disconnected because I forgot to DO IT.....although I don't recall any subsequences from this (as I always double-triple checked everything before firing her up,..YES: I caught myself overlooking (re)making this connection upon reassembly). NOT SURE, AT ALL,..if such is related to your "cause",..so: not to distract....I wouldn't know jack about "a "74 with a Motronic",..well,..maybe a little,..but NOT specifics, although I love to read the stuff......,..(but that's all it is)....I'm a bit busy these days to indulge this SO desired knowleadge realm.....

ANYWAZE,..your pic reminded me of the days of my oversight (not necc'y "technical,....sorry)...

BEST!

Doyle
