Am I missing something? Clutch replacement.
 

I have a 1980SC.

I am replacing the clutch. I have the engine and trans dropped. I have the 4 nuts removed from the trans that attach it to the engine. The trans will wiggle on the studs but will not come off the engine. What am I missing here?

Need to disconnect the clutch fork from the pressure plate.

If you have your clutch arm assy off the shaft that is pointing straight down, the fork will turn and slip off the throwout bearing as you seperate them. If the arm and spring are still on, it wont.

Remove clutch position lever.......
 

To disengage the clutch fork, you need to remove the clutch position lever first. I borrowed this picture from another post. The clutch position lever with circlip is seen at the lower right of the picture.

you dont have to remove the arm. just take a big screwdriver and move the big lever towards the front of the car until the omega spring snaps over center.

Awesome! I dropped the levers and replaced the spring in the past year, so they came right off tonight. The trans and engine split no problem. Thanks tons guys! Any need to know info on the clutch???

When I replaced the clutch on my SC, I used one of the Sachs Power Clutch kits with the aluminum clutch cover. It is quite a bit lighter than a cast iron cover, lets the engine rev a bit quicker and doesn't cost as much as a lightened flywheel. Be certain to use new flywheel bolts, assuming you are replacing the rear main seal while in there. You can make a flywheel holding tool out of a double boxend wrench (box end on both ends) by putting one of the cover plate bolts back in the flywheel and using one of the bell housing bolts on the other end. Effective and free! Good luck with your project.

80SC flywheel bolts are re-usable. It is a good idea to replace the rear main seal now.

Not to hijack, but how did you like the lighter clutch? Noticeable?

I do like it! Makes the engine feel more responsive without being too sensitive on the bottom end. Not a huge difference, but noticible.

Flywheel bolts (12 point) holding the flywheel on are not reusable as they are stretch bolts, like rod bolts.
The 9 8mm pressure plate bolts are reusable if the heads are still good.
