Old radio / new speakers?
I'm still a newby to this forum and to 911, so I'll post some pics up front before my question. Apologize if my question is redundant, but this one is a little different from what I could find.
Deals with audio. The kenwood with panasonic & jvc speakers that are in there now are terrible. I was thinking about going one of two ways with the sound...modern or original. If I go modern whatever changes I make must be reversible, and I would want some integration with my cell phone (Apple). No cutting. If I go old-school it would be a Blaupunkt (Dearborn???not sure what model) with some good new speakers. I want the original look if possible. The questions I have are: 1) Has anyone used good modern speakers in stock locations with a Blaupunkt Dearborn or something like that? Does it sound good? 2) Any recommendations on speakers/models that people like (or didn't like once they were installed)? 3) Any install pictures would be nice. Thanks ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

My 68 Blaupunkt Frankfurt has a DIN plug on the back and you can purchase a DIN adaptor for Ipods. I think these old radios sound really sweet with new speakers. Some of the old school audiophiles like the Macintosh crowd actually believe tube amplifiers sound better. As for me 2000+ hours flying fighters makes it hard for me to be this discriminating. I say go for it.

Since you are listening to music in a compressed format (radio, iPod, etc) you will gain more benefit from new speakers that a new head unit. Your original speakers are most likely shot. The paper cones and surrounds are subject to deteriation from sun, moisture, heat, cold, etc, etc, etc. Just about anything in modern construction (poly cones and rubber or foam surrounds) will be a noticable improvement. Don't overspend on speakers (expensive does not necessarily translate to the best sound) spend your money on a B&B header set-up with a Burch 2-in-1-out muffler. Sweeetest music ever!

Wow - that car is stunning. Not much more to add.
On second thought, I listen to my old 72 Frankfurt - in mono - through a couple of new speakers set in place of the original one. Some guy was selling them on ebay a few years ago. Sure improved the sound, but nothing like a modern system.

Compromise and go with a new/modern Blaupunkt.
Take a look at the BT410 --- available via amazon.de. Price is reasonable. If you ship to US amazon actually reduces price by 19% because there's no VAT here. BT410 has bluetooth connectivity for phone talk and music. I bought and installed a BT400 (last year's model) into my 83 SC --- could not be happier. Good luck

Read this thread and do what daniel911T suggests in post #12. Get the Infiniti speakers. They are dirt cheap these days. shipfaced sums it up with "anything .... modern... will be a noticeable improvement".
Audio experts - village idiot needs help I like the 12-ish year old Becker head units for Porsche. I have the CDR210 which I do not think can accept IPod/MP3 music, but the CRD220 can. They look Porsche as well. Ebay always has them for sale. Here is a pic RWebb posted in a link ![]() Edit - "Noticeable" improvement is an understatement. |

For good sound, good (not necessarily pricy) speakers are key.
Most any decent head unit will be able to output decent quality sound. Earlier HEs look the part, though, not blingy and shiny like most modern ones. You might even consider a Blau Ventura...? ![]() There's someone on eBay selling a NOS one - The Becker CDR220 can have auxiliary inputs for an ipod. Don't know about the Blau. VERY nice cab, BTW. ![]()

I got my 78 SC with new speakers in it, but they are the same size and shape as the original ones. The only difference is that there is no grill cover over them, they have there own covers. They fit in the original holes as well as i can tell. I dont know what they are off the top of my head but ill check. They sound great, they are running through a Kenwood aftermarket stereo which sounds great as well. The stereo has a 1/8 in stereo jack so i can connect my Ipod right in to it. I prefer this over the USB jack, as the USB jacks that i have seen tend to lock the ipod and you have to control it from the stereo's jog wheel which i dont like. Ill get some model numbers for you as soon as I can unfortuantly i am not near the car right now.
Best Dave
