I'm probably just being crazy, but I was wondering if my engine sounds alright or not. I think that I am hearing something. Instead of telling everyone what sound I might hear, and asking about it, I would like to ask if anything sounds out of the ordinary with my engine.

apart from the tappets, i cant hear anything out of the ordinary, but am sure there will be others along soon who will give their opinions too. ![]() |

Thanks for the super fast replies!
If a slight exhaust leak is the case, is there any harm in leaving it go for awhile? Thanks!

No but I would suggest you at least find out where it is.
I know driving season is almost over for us so it could be a winter project. I've got my list started already. ![]()

Sounds more like tappets to me than an exhaust blow, if you listen more closely you will hear that its more of a metalic click sound.
Just my two pence worth. ![]() Anthony. |

Okay... I put the car in the air & had a better listen. It is definitely from the 4-5-6 bank, and I'm pretty sure it's from #4, but I was unable to get really close, because it's hot under there!! I'm thinking I should adjust my valves before I buy new exhaust gaskets and all that stuff, in case the noise goes away. This might be a stupid question, but can exhaust leaks develop from the air injection hook-ups at the heads? The PO took the smog stuff off long ago, and left the spider lines on, and put a rubber cap on the line where the air pump would hook up. Should I buy the plugs sold by our host and seal them up, or is the current solution sufficient?
Thanks again ![]()

I want to make sure I'm talking about the right components... Can exhaust leak from the things (air injectors?) that go into the head, right near the exhaust ports? As you can see, the thermal reactors were ditched and replaced with the units pictured.

Yes, it is common for a leak to develop at those locations.

Use a mechanic stethoscope.......
Red,
Use the right tool for this diagnostic test. The sound you are hearing could be coming from another spot and a stethoscope could help you narrow down the source of the noise. If the 'spider' line is plugged, that should not contribute to some sort of air nose. Observe the sound (noise) when the engine is cold and warm too. Some people worry too much on things that are very minor. This is your car and do what you feel is prudent. Tony |

I forgot to include the pictures of the components I am talking about...
![]() ![]() Boyt, Thanks for the reply. I actually have already used a mechanics stethoscope, with no obvious results. There is no loud noise under the valve covers, or anywhere near where the noise sounds to be coming from, which led to me to believe it was an exhaust leak. I'm assuming a mechanics stethoscope would not pick up on an exhaust leak, as the noise is air passing through something, not an actual object to object contact. Thanks to everyone for the input so far!

hi,
while you have the car in the air, if the aditional air injection system has been disconected, i would remove all the air pipe system and purchase the threaded plugs that fit straight into the manifolds, then no more wories as far as that is concerned. ![]() Anthony. |

Any advice on painless removal of the air injectors/ plumbing? I think B'laster will be my friend. Thanks ![]()

1 more question... Does anyone know the approximate torque setting for the smog pump port plugs? I would guess I would be safe at about 20ish lb/ft. Would this setting be pretty good for the exhaust nuts on the head as well?
Thanks ![]()

Sometimes it is possible to "feel" exhaust leaks.
You want to do this on start up, when everything is cold. Hold your hand close to exhaust components while the car is running, particularly where the system is joined via gaskets, bolts, etc. It's possible to feel the exhaust escaping through bad gaskets. Don't do this when the engine has been running!!!! You have a short window of time where you can really reach in and around the system, without fear of burns and you'll feel the exhaust "pulsing" out of a leaky joint/gasket, hole, etc. Just a thought as you dig into the issue. Good luck!

Thanks Winter! I drained the oil out of the car to do a valve adjust, and also to replace the s-hose, so I can't start it yet. With the car in the air, I'm just going to put all my smog plugs in. If the car still leaks, I have gaskets to do the bank I know the leak is coming from. Do you happen to know what the torque setting for the smog pump plugs is?
Thanks!
